You might also try the Ulead Video Studio 8(Win) to switch them over. You're right about editable Mpeg-2. I have been using a trick workaround where I get the file to 1:1 aspect and drop the interlacing temporarily and use SVCD specs which can be either interlaced or non-interlaced (either works and is a vague spec for SVCD). In post, I resize and reinterlace for DVD with Ulead.
I tried it the other day with AVGeeks "200" and got the film a lot closer to red white and blue ( the blue turned sort of greenish from age) and on playback not a pixel was missing. But if I put a standard Mpeg-2 into TMpeg it would crash it immediately. A lot of editors like Pinnacle are discontinuing import of interlaced files, maybe because of difficulty in stream, maybe because of DVD piracy issues.
